One of the most well known and certainly one of the most controversial comedians of his generation has died today.
E! is reporting that George Carlin died of heart failure after checking himself into the hospital. It was his second major heart episode; the first coming when he was 41.
It really is a sad day for lovers of comedy. Whether you loved him or hated him, Carlin’s influence is undeniable. He was a a pioneer of mainstreaming blue…make that very blue stand up comedy.
Has he done much lately? Not really. He was still working but the edge was certainly dulling. However, I guess that’s the unfortunate normal march of time.
No matter what your thoughts on Carlin, he influenced some/all of the comedic entertainmers who enjoy watching and laughing at. For that alone, he should be remembered and respected.
Sydney Pollack, actor, director-damn good at both; has succumb to cancer at the age of 73. I have read reports that said it was stomach cancer that he was having treated in Houston, but I suppose that’s not entirely relevant.
What is relevant is that you remember this remarkable talent and enjoy his past work. It’s also important that you remember to listen to your body. If something seems wrong, seek medical attention; especially later on in life.
Sydney lived a long fruitful life, but many have their cut short by this silent killer when people don’t take care of themselves.
So, take care of yourselves.

Freaky shit here. Emilio Diaz, Cameron’s father, developed a case of the flu recently and it turned into pneumonia. He was otherwise healthy, but still succumb to the disease at age 58. TMZ.com reports:
“We’re told the 58-year-old Emilio Diaz, a popular resident of Seal Beach, Calif., recently developed the flu which then turned into pneumonia. We hear his death was “shocking” as Emilio was in “terrific health.” Diaz is currently filming her upcoming flick “My Sister’s Keeper.” A source on the set tells us production on the film was shut down today. Emilio was a second generation Cuban-American who worked as a foreman for an oil company.”
Freaky, freaky shit. 58 isn’t all that old at all to be dying from anything. I guess it’s just a reminder to keep as good a care of yourself as you possibly can because you never know what might sneak up and take you…even then it still might take you.
Condolences are offered, but surely aren’t ever enough. Hopefully Cameron and her family are able to find a place of semi-normality sooner rather than later after this gigantic loss.

There was once a time when if a man looked at you sideways you asked him if he had something to say to you. If he was just spacing out he’d apologize and you buy each other a shot of whiskey and keep that fucking bar open until 4 a.m and chat up everything in a skirt that passed by your way.
If he did have a problem, he’d own up to it and you’d step outside to duke it out a bit. No cheap shot bullshit, no pulling out knives or pistols if the other guy is throwing fists only. At the end of it all, you buy each other a shot of whiskey and keep that fucking bar open until 4 a.m. and chat up everything with a skirt that passed by your way.
Charlton Heston was a throwback to a time when men didn’t talk about connecting with their feminine side because they cut that son of a bitch out with a ka-bar knife fighitng commies or Nazis in some god forsaken shithole just because they needed something fun to do that year.
He was a throwback to a time when if there was a raccoon fucking up your trash cans and harassing your dogs at all hours of the night you didn’t call animal control and wait 4 hours for them to come hit it with the taser and gas it to death for you. You went in your house, pulled out your varmint rifle (which if you weren’t a pussy you’d know how it’s different from your average deer rifle) shoot the son of a bitch, skin it and have it for dinner the next day.

So weird! I was just watching The Halls of Montezuma and commenting on how fantastic this son of a bitch was.Well, he is fantastic no more as he has passed away at the age of 93. The Chicago Tribune reports:
Richard Widmark, who made an indelible screen debut in 1947 as a giggling sadistic killer and later brought a sense of urban cynicism and unpredictability to his roles as a leading man, has died. He was 93.
Widmark died Monday at his home in Roxbury, Conn., after a long illness, his wife, Susan Blanchard, told the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday. She said a fractured vertebrae Widmark suffered in a fall last year was the beginning of his illness.
“I lost a dear friend, and you don’t have friends like him,” Karl Malden, who first met Widmark in New York when they were both, he said Wednesday, “hustling for radio work” in the early 1940s. Malden later appeared in five movies with Widmark.
How could I neglect Kiss of Death? Fuck. They simply don’t make films like that anymore and they certainly don’t make actors like Richard Widmark anymore. One of the all time great movie tough guys.

Anthony Minghella was in England getting what was supposed to be a routine operation on his neck when he suffered a brain hemorrhage.
He has multiple Oscar nominations and was well thought of in the UK film community as well as in Hollywood.

Blind blues guitarist famous for playing with the guitar flat on his lap has died of cancer.
It was originally cancer that took his eyes when he was 1 and it seems that the evil beast known as cancer has come back and won the war it waged with Jeff.
In all honesty he hasn’t been all that prominent since the 80’s and early 90’s but I think most people of a certain age remember him and can’t help but have a degree of admiration for all he was able to accomplish especially given his disability.
On a semi-joking note, it allows me to post a video of the guitar duel from Crossroads between Steve Vai and Karate Kid (actually is was Ry Cooder) where Vai totally kicks the shit out of him but still somehow loses anyway which is ridiculous because Vai is god. I realize that it was Road House that Jeff Appeared in but I couldn’t find a good guitar video of that (though a humorous clip of it appears after the break) and Crossroads is pretty close since it’s a shit bar and a blues band.
Yeah, I mostly just wanted to work in the Crossroads video. ‘Head cuttin!”
