As people are often wont to do, they ask the opinion of PROFESSIONALS about topics they know without perhaps having the full access they’d need to make a definitive diagnosis.
This situation arose when Dr. Drew Pinksy of Loveline and Celebrity Rehab fame, (who has been a practicing physician for over 20 years) was interviewed by Playboy and asked about possible mental pathology as it pertains to Tom Cruise:
“A lot of people in the public eye who behave strangely have mental illness we can learn from, and much of it is based on childhood trauma, without a doubt. Take a guy like Tom Cruise. Why would somebody be drawn into a cultish kind of environment like Scientology? To me, that’s a function of a very deep emptiness and suggests serious neglect in childhood – maybe some abuse, but mostly neglect.”
Ever the one to react rationally, Tom Cruise’s people issued this statement to Page 6:
“This unqualified television performer who is obviously just looking for notoriety is so grotesquely unprofessional as to pretend to diagnose Tom and others without ever meeting them. He seems to be spewing the absurdity that all Scientologists are mentally ill. The last time we heard garbage like this was from Joseph Goebbels.”
Nice one tool. A doctor, who deals with addiction and mental illness making a baseline judgment on someone with available data is a Nazi? Overstate much fuck face? In my opinion, he sounds like he is spot on. The more you deny and deflect the more it sounds like he’s hitting close to home so….
Dr. Drew’s people later issued an apology:
“Although Mr. Fields’s intent is clearly to slander and discredit Dr. Drew, under no circumstances is Dr. Drew making a blanket diagnosis about Scientology nor Mr. Cruise whom he does not know. Dr. Drew was simply using Mr. Cruise as an example of someone who is recognizable to help the public understand. Again, Dr. Drew meant him no harm.”
I don’t like it. Sure it’s a nonology, but it’s not harsh enough. Mine pretty much would have said
“Fuck you, I’m a doctor. I went to school for 10 years to learn how to identify fuck nuts like you retards. You hissy fit has only shown us that we are 100% correct about you nutso. So chock to death on a bucket of bull semen you fucking jack off”
